Today, UPS Capital announced its CommerceShield™ solution, an end-to-end e-commerce risk mitigation solution that builds on the company’s proven expertise in protecting shipments and revenue, enabling merchants to identify, mitigate and reduce order risk before it turns into a loss. This solution converts fragmented data into a clear risk score, enabling smarter decisions, automated safeguards, and stronger protection before fulfillment begins.
For years, UPS Capital® services have helped merchants safeguard against the financial risk of shipping through solutions like InsureShield® shipping insurance, protecting against loss, damage, and porch piracy, regardless of carrier or mode.
While these protections remain essential, they address only one piece of a much broader and evolving challenge. Risk today spans the full order lifecycle from checkout to delivery. Fraud in digital commerce is rapidly evolving beyond isolated payment events. According to Mastercard’s Cyber-fraud Integration for the New Age of Risk report, global chargeback losses are expected to approach nearly $42B in global chargeback losses by 2028, with 45% of disputes tied to fraud. But the true cost extends well beyond the initial loss. A LexisNexis study estimates that each $1 of fraud can generate an estimated $5 in downstream costs, compounding pressure on margins and growth.
Today, most merchants are managing fraud tools, shipping insurance, claims, and chargeback disputes as separate workflows.
Unlike common point solutions, the CommerceShield™ solution unifies order data, UPS® logistics intelligence, and machine learning into one connected solution, helping merchants spot issues early, take the right action and protect revenue without sacrificing growth.
"Merchants don't experience fraud, shipping mishaps, claims, and chargebacks as separate problems; they experience them as one collective blow to revenue and customer trust," said Archita Prasad, President at UPS. "The CommerceShield™ solution was built to connect those signals into a single decision layer, so merchants can approve more good orders with confidence, reduce the losses that are preventable, and recover faster on the ones that aren't."
Designed to work alongside existing e-commerce systems, the CommerceShield™ solution uses machine learning and AI-enabled intelligence to evaluate order-level signals and automate actions such as holding fulfillment, routing to a secure location, adding signature controls and shipping insurance - helping merchants prevent loss and reduce friendly fraud.
For Buru, a fast-growing women’s apparel brand, the challenge was real. As order volume increased, manual workflows made disputes harder to manage and revenue harder to protect. UPS helped Buru bring more control into the order and claims process — reducing manual effort, improving visibility, and helping the business scale with greater confidence.
“Control wasn’t a feature. It became essential to how we operate and grow,” said Brett Buru, co-founder of Buru.
What makes the CommerceShield™ solution different is the ability to connect fulfillment decisions to UPS’s vast delivery signals, so merchants can act, not just react. With visibility across the full order journey, they can act earlier, in ways standalone fraud tools can’t support.
The CommerceShield™ risk mitigation solution marks the next evolution of UPS’s risk strategy, extending beyond protection against shipping losses to help merchants manage risk across the full order process, enabling greater clarity, faster decisioning and increased confidence at scale.
